Gosh no!

Here’s a good rationale for why the whole “calorie-in…calorie-out” argument doesn’t work for everyone.

It goes a long way to explain why I can’t stand the phrase, and he’s only just touched on the effect of hormones in this equation. Throw in an ovarian cyst, endometriosis, PMT, menopause, pre and post pregnancy hormones etc. etc. into this mix and you can see why I always say “I never met a tasty calorie”.

I strongly believe that it’s almost impossible to over-eat on a truly healthy diet, so who cares what the calorie count is?

At the end of the day, the quality of the food you put into your body is the key factor to determining your health. Not how many units of energy that food has.

An interesting read

Further to yesterday’s post re ‘quality not calorie’ on recent study (one of the largest feeding studies ever) concluded that…

“…a more effective strategy to lose weight over the long term is to focus on cutting processed carbohydrates, not calories.”

https://www.latimes.com/opinion/op-ed/la-oe-ludwig-carbohydrate-insulin-study-20181114-story.html?fbclid=IwAR0W8grlqzrER32L_MuZdv-ooWXgHtBi73hzIrpln1UFk3brc4UfEASQLrQ

So easy to start

Some simple and straightforward tips to help you keep your body working at its best.

Of course Endermologie treatments will help the detoxification process along more effectively and quickly as it timetables your lymphatic to expel all this toxins out. Just ask anyone who’s had a full body treatment… some people even notice that they’re weeing and pooping more even 24 hours later, and the fluid build up (inflammation) is relieved almost immediately!

Knowledge is power

See below for 8-10 fast facts about the Lymphatic System, thanks to @bodyballancer.

Remember that Endermologie stimulates an increase in lymphatic circulation by 300% after each treatment which lasts for at least 6 hours. Most Clients notice a feeling of rejuvenation, with lighter legs, less bloating, and smoother, healthier skin after just one treatment. Imagine the benefits a course of treatments will bring!

🌟Facts 1 to 5🌟

1. It is the least understood and most undervalued of all the body systems- if it stopped working we would die within 24-48 hours
🌟
2. It is approximately twice the size of the blood circulation system and manages almost double the volume of fluid daily
🌟
3. Unlike the circulatory system, it is a one-way system and has no ‘pump’, relying on movement, gravity and breathing to keep flowing
🌟
4. There are between 400-800 lymph nodes in the body that constantly monitor and filter the lymph to remove toxins, waste and pathogens
🌟
5. Swelling of the lymph nodes (or ‘glands’) in the neck are an indication that the body is in the throes of fighting an infection.

Why I’m not a fan

Excellent article about the importance of maintaining a balanced skin microbiome for healthy, glowing skin.

This is one of the reasons I shy away from using peels, masks, abrasive skin treatments and most “skin- care” products, as these can alter the skin’s ability to heal and replenish.

That’s why I think all you need is Endermologie coupled with a natural, organic micellar lotion to cleanse and a light touch of moisturiser if your skin needs it.

Me neither. But a little toning wouldn’t go amiss!

So let’s face it, people like @victoriasilvstedt are born with the genetic blessing for ahmaaazing bodies. Also, I’m sure sure works her butt off in the gym/on the beach etc etc and maintains a super-healthy diet. To be fair it looks like she may also have a little surgical intervention here and there.

But that skin tone? That’s thanks to Endermologie.

A thorough and enlightening article regarding rosacea. If you know anyone who suffers from this condition, I would strongly suggest you share it.

Some of my Clients have tried numerous treatments over the years – all skin deep (i.e. laser, facials, needling etc), and it seems no-one has ever mentioned to them that they ought to be looking at their health/lifestyle/diet first.

Fructans, Fructose, Lactose, Polyols, Galacto-Oligosaccharides,

FODMAPs, which contain Oligo- Di- Mono-saccharides and Polyols, are fermentable fibers and therefore can cause unwanted bloating, gas, and G.I. distress in those that have gut dysbiosis (an imbalance of microorganisms in the intestines.) This is why many adopt a low FODMAP diet for a period of time until they can heal and balance the gut.

Perhaps you’ve heard of FODMAPs or the low FODMAP diet? FODMAPs are a collection of short chain carbohydrates, or sugars, that aren’t absorbed by the gut and can cause gas, bloating and abdominal discomfort for some people. @TheGutHealthMD, gastroenterologist Dr. Will Bulsiewicz, named the most common FODMAPs he sees in the average diet:
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🥛🧀Lactose – A disaccharide found in dairy products like milk, ice cream, and some cheeses.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍎🍯Fructose – A simple sugar found in many fruits (cherries, watermelon, apples), some veggies (asparagus, Jerusalem artichokes), high fructose corn syrup and honey.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🌾Fructans – Oligosaccharides found in a variety of foods, including gluten containing grains (wheat, barley, rye) as well as fruits and veggies (garlic, onions).
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Galacto-oligosaccharides– Complex sugars classically found in beans.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
🍬Polyols – Sugar alcohols like mannitol and sorbitol, often found in artificial sweeteners and some fruits and veggies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What experience do you have with a low FODMAP diet?

And they taste great too!

Our liver is one of the hardest working organs in our bodies (though I think the skin takes a winning prize too). It performs over 500 vital functions in helping our bodies to detox and work optimally.

For example it’s responsible for the production of bile, which helps carry away waste and break down fats in the small intestine during digestion. It also creates some proteins for blood plasma that assist with blood clotting and it metabolises carbohydrates (and fats) to produce energy.

It’s vital in breathing down the many toxins we ingest regularly and of course we know it takes the brunt of our alcohol indulgences.

So, show it some love and pop these on your plate regularly!

Get these in your belly

The rules of eating to lower inflammation are quite simple: you need to start by limiting foods that cause inflammation in the body.

The foods that seem to be most strongly related to this response are white or colourless, lack flavour and aroma – even if they have a strong taste like sweetness – and are nutrient sparse and calorie dense. What do these include? Sugars, carbs such as white bread, pasta and rice, foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, and vegetable oils such as sunflower.

Here are some anti-inflammatory alternatives from @functional.foods i.e foods that are colourful, flavourful, aromatic, nutrient dense and calorie sparse 💚 | 📷 @functional.foods #Repost @bodyandsoul_au

It’s the active phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables

Repost @themethodnow
・・・
What is Sulforaphane?! 🥦 Before we dive in, we think it’s time you start sprinkling a little bit of sprouts over your meals. 😍🌱⁣

👉🏼 Let us explain! It’s the active phytochemical in cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, bok choy, brussels sprouts, cauliflower (a.k.a. the good stuff — this phytochemical helps plants thrive. ⁣

How does Sulforaphane benefit you? ✅ ⁣

😱 Helps promote fat loss – sulforaphane releases a substance that improves the way the body’s adipose fat cells consume energy. By also improving your gut flora, the efficiency benefits are twofold and this can contribute to weight loss.⁣

😱 Reduces cancer risk – sulforaphane also contains a high concentration of antioxidants and is a powerful anti-cancer compound by inhibiting blood vessel growth (angiogenesis), inducing programmed cell death (apoptosis), and inhibiting cell proliferation/migration.⁣

➕ Protects the GI Tract ⁣
➕ Improves Immune System Function ⁣
➕ Encourages body detoxification ⁣
➕ Reduces inflammation ⁣
➕ And so much more— this is only the beginning! ⁣

So how do we get a bunch of this ”good stuff” in a higher concentration? 🌱Sprinkle a few sprouts on every meal which have a very minimal taste compared to it’s adult life sources (full grown cruciferous vegetables). ⁣

🤔 Raw cruciferous vegetables also doesn’t contain any sulforaphane until you start to chew it. Most of these beneficial phytonutrients are also slightly degraded when exposed to heat (steaming, baking etc). 🔥⁣

You can find them at your local health food store or sprout your own! 🌱🙌🏼

Sick as close to real food sources as possible

Just eat real food

Repost @calories.hub. Credit also to @thehealthylabel
・・・
Hey guys! 🤗 I’m just here with a reminder that the way you eat doesn’t need a label. The breakfast on the left could be classified as keto, paleo, dairy free, gluten free etc… but it’s also just real nourishing food.
.
I don’t think it’s necessary to place a label on your dietary choices in order to live a truly healthy lifestyle. With labels come identity. We associate with Team Paleo, Team Keto, or Team CICO, and this creates separation, anxiety, and worst of all, judgement.
.
A healthy diet simply incorporates food that makes you feel physically good, is enjoyable, and demotes weird, processed, undernourishing pseudo-foods to occasional indulgences.
.
If you have a medical condition with specific dietary needs, certain ethical or cultural values, food intolerances, or simply don’t feel amazing when you eat a certain food group, that’s totally okay, because my key message here is that you need to do what is going to work for YOU both in the short term, and long term (i.e. preventative health).
.
There’s no single optimal dietary pattern that we should all follow, because the truth is that everybody and every BODY is different.
.
We are not programmed like robots, and will inevitably fall off the bandwagon of a diet that we find restrictive and unsustainable. It’s important to allow room for flexibility, self-compassion and the ability to interpret what your body is telling you. For example, is it hungry because you are simply bored, or had a huge bowl of pasta for lunch and are jonesing to keep your blood sugar up, or are you genuinely hungry?
.
How do you feel about this topic?

And invest in proven treatments instead

A great read for those who need a legitimate reason to stop spending crazy money on “skincare products”.

Investing in proven rejuvenation treatments like Endermologie is a far more sensible way to maintain a healthy, younger-looking skin.

Endermologie in the media

When Endermologie makes headlines in Poland, you kinda wonder why so many Aussies have never heard of it?

Could it be that Australian’s are just a little more protective of their beauty “secrets”?

I know confidentiality is very important to my clients for that very reason, but I do hope one day Endermologie can be something that everyone can enjoy!

After all, it’s non-invasive with plenty of health benefits, so we ought to be shouting about it from the rooftops!

Food is the best medicine

OK, so Easter’s over and I finally feel like I want to start nourishing my body instead of feeding it rubbish!

Are you ready to join me back on the healthy food bandwagon?

Age-old knowledge has taught us that certain foods are good for us… e.g. honey is great for a sore throat due to it’s anti-bacterial and anti-fungal properties and the Vitamin C in lemons and other citrus fruits help to boost our immunity and fight colds. But the food we choose can go so far beyond that.

Thankfully, more and more research is being undertaken to demonstrate the benefits of certain foodstuffs. It’s my hope that one day Doctor’s will be able to prescribe a healthy diet to their patients (when appropriate) rather than relying on the use of pharmaceuticals.

I’ll be posting a few interesting (scientific) articles here to illustrate the effect some foods can have on health and ill-health.

Let’s grab some blueberries instead of a cookie for our afternoon snack this week eh?

https://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/909717?src=wnl_tp10n_190411_mscpedit&uac=258670EG&impID=1933229&faf=1&fbclid=IwAR2Ww35awhSi8UpieYTv0KVeeVKW1pP-Q9K3CE7Ycwmz60BLprFYrIvX7Es

Eat the pith of citrus fruits

Have you heard that the pith of citrus fruit (the white part under the zest) is a great food to eat to help reduce the occurrence of cellulite?

It’s been known for many hundreds of years of Ayurvedic medicine to boost lymphatic circulation and recent research has confirmed these findings.

Your gut microbiome is very, very important

This is a handy list to know

Truth

So true. Every week on Facebook I see people asking for advice on a skin issue which cues hundreds of suggestions for different skincare products and brands and I’m in the corner thinking, nope, this person’s gotta start with their lifestyle.
.
For the most part, the products we use on our skin have very little effect. The best we can hope for in a product that’s been sold over the counter is an emollient (a barrier that’s helpful in retaining moisture in the skin) and a sunscreen that helps block harmful UV rays.
.
Some products can cause more harm than benefit, with chemicals, parabens and all sorts being added to commercial potions all on the name of anti-ageing or purportedly designed to fix some problem.
.
The reality is our skin is a living, breathing organ and it requires care from the inside out to look it’s best. Most skin issues are just symptoms of a bigger systemic issue – our bodies clever warning system alerting us to take a closer look at our lifestyle.
.
For the most part, reducing stress, eating a diet rich in varying non-processed foods, managing any gut issues, staying hydrated and exercising regularly will all result in clear, beautiful skin.
.

Endermologie can help to rejuvenate them naturally

Are your lips needing some TLC? Over the years expression lines can become more prominent leading to “smokers lines”, or as they’re now called… “barcode” lines. Either way, not terribly flattering!

There are several treatment options available. Botox will reduce the expression and therefore ease the source of the problem, but can lead to issues with speech (some people find it hard to pronounce some sounds properly after botox treatment), and there’s a possibility of reduced mobility making eating and drinking more difficult.

Fillers will help to fill in the lines and boost the overall volume of the lips making the lines softer, but there’s a risk that it’ll end up looking unnatural if too much product is used or not administered with precision.

There’s PRP injections which will create a subtle boost (but can leave you looking a little beaten up for a week or so) or the plasma pen which works well to reduce the lines, but also requires some down time and is risky for some skin types.

And then we have my favourite, Endermologie of course! It’s non-invasive, so no down time is required and you’ll notice a subtle improvement with each treatment.

If you want to try it without charge, just book in for a consult at www.peninsulaendermologie.com

Anti-ageing tricks

I admire this point of view by The Holistic Nutritionist (see link) and while I still think botox has its place occasionally, I do urge use with caution.

I wholeheartedly stand by each piece of a advice she gives with regards to natural skin preservation.

Just chuck an Endermologie treatment (or 20) on there and you’ll be amazed by the difference these changes make.

You ought to!

I’ve had a few people ask me which collagen supplement I take, so here’s the one I buy in my local Ritchies Grocers.

If online shopping is more your thing, search for Great Lakes (grass-fed gelatin, available at iherb.com).

If you balk at the idea of eating a meat source, then perhaps ‘ancient & wild’ marine collagen might be a good alternative.

As long as it’s from a clean source and hydrolysed, you’re on the right track.

Or, the best source of all is from a great home-made bone broth. I make mine in my slow cooker with chicken bones, simply add a dash of apple cider vinegar, cover the bones with filtered water and simmer for at least 24 hours (longer is better), then chuck in some herbs and veggies for the last few hours of cooking to add some flavour. You can add chicken feet too for an almost guaranteed gelatinous result.

Then drink regularly and use as a base for soup/stirfries etc etc.

Do your homework.

Image from Connie Brennan. With thanks.

As you can see, facial anatomy is complex. There are several anatomical danger zones that have the propensity for drastic complications.
.
If you are considering any invasive facial treatment, such as surgery, botox, fillers, laser etc, then make sure you do your research and find someone who is fully qualified, has many years of experience and uses good quality products.
.
The number of cheap Chinese imported fillers stopped at border control is growing exponentially every year, so make sure you’re getting what you’re paying for.
.
If you think it’s just not worth the risk, then Endermologie can help deliver anti-ageing results using a natural, zero-risk and scientifically proven technique.

A great reminder

Happy birthday to me & Peninsula Endermologie

Hi there. It’s Niamh, proud owner of Peninsula Endermologie.
.
It’s my birthday today and as as I’ve only just celebrated Peninsula Endermologie’s third birthday, I thought it was high time I re-introduced myself.
.
Now, this photo isn’t recent. Since this was taken about 18 mths ago, my hair has grown whiter and longer. Having an updated photo taken is on my ever-growing to-do list. I promise, you’ll be the first to see it!
.
But it’s still a good representation of me, in my happy place. You see, Peninsula Endermologie began, not as a business idea, but as a place for friends to come and get rid of their bloomin cellulite. I bought my first Endermologie machine for entirely selfish reasons. I couldn’t get to Therapist in Melbourne, so I bought my own. Sure, it was a “little” indulgent, but you don’t know how much I hated my cellulite!
.
Once I’d bought my machine home, I stayed treating my girlfriends who came over for a treatment and a chat. Surprisingly, within a couple of months, I stayed getting calls from people I hadn’t met before, asking if they could come and see me too. Turns out, I’m not the only one who hated their cellulite.
.
And here’s where the joy happens. I finally confronted my feelings about my cellulite and that once-debilitating “condition” became something we tackled together. These women became my friends. And so my well-thought-out-business-model (ahem) of having people over for a treatment and a chat, became my daily life. At the risk of sounding all woo woo, I really believe the Universe knew what I needed before I did.

Now here I am on my 47th birthday, thanking my lucky stars for my wonderful life. I am so grateful to my family, here and abroad, and to my friends (I’m including all of my Clients in this description).

So, to all the beautiful women who’ve crossed my path over the last few years, supporting me through my varied hair dramas, lending willing ears for my endless words and sharing their experiences with me, I sincerely thank you.

Another one that’s well worth a read

The importance of lymphatic circulation doesn’t just end in the body and it stands to reason that the healthier your systemic (body) circulation, the healthier your glymphatic (brain) circulation will be too.

Keep that lymph flowing peeps.

If you’re not sure how, come and have a chat with me and I’ll share plenty of tips that will make a big difference.

Your imperfections are welcomed here

I want to spend a little time explaining my philosophy on body image & self love. Settle in, this could be a long one.
.
One of the conundrums I experience daily is that I actively promote Endermologie as a treatment to alter the appearance of our bodies whilst also vehemently arguing that we should love and adore our bodies right as they are.
.
Sounds contradictory right?
.
Let me tell you I’ve spent many, many hours wondering if people think I’m just an absolute arse of a hypocrite.
.
Well here’s the thing. I’ve spent years working in an industry that mostly depended on people acting on their insecurities. Now, I believe there’s a great value in Cosmetic surgery, in the hands of the right surgeon & for the right reasons. I’ve seen people step out of the shadows with a wonderful new confidence in themselves after a simple correction to a problem that may have held them back from loving themselves for years.
.
But it’s also true that cosmetic surgery & the resulting expectations can be very damaging.
.
I’ve seen people spend a fortune and risk their health by aspiring to a ‘look’ that’s so unlike the original version of them, it’s disturbing. In these cases I truly believe that surgeons ought to apply the brakes & the ‘patient’ in question needs to be supported in spending more time focusing on their emotional health.
.
The reality is however, that for the most part, us humans are great at recognising our perceived ‘flaws’, no matter how gorgeous we appear to the outside world, there’s usually something we would like to “get fixed”.
.
Our hairy legs, the hips that got bigger after each baby, the slightly wonky nose that looks weird in photos, our bumpy legs. Many of these we learn to live with & even embrace over time, but I reckon most of us get to a point where we think it’s easier to fix it, rather than waste all that energy worrying about it.
.
And that’s why I adore Endermologie. It can help you work at those things you want fixed, but instead of putting you at risk, it’s actually beneficial for your health & makes you feel awesome after each treatment.
.
There’s one caveat though. I want you to love your body hard through the process. The end.

It doesn’t have to anymore

I’ve had three people in the past 2 weeks confess to me that they loved living by the sea but hated #summer cause they were embarrassed to wear #shorts/#bathers.
.
And I know that feeling all too well.
.
As I told them, 90% off women have #cellulite, it’s perfectly normal, but often times we only see the 10% of women who have been genetically blessed with #cellulite-free legs wearing their shorty shorts, whilst the rest of us cover up self-consciously, so we start to believe our legs “are worse than everyone else’s”.
.
And when we waste our money trying those ‘specialist cellulite body lotions’ and don’t see any difference, it confirms those thoughts for us.
.
The reality is, cellulite is perfectly normal and common, and though I cheer on women who wear their shorts regardless of their #dimples, it is a sign that our #lymphatic#circulation is struggling. And the longer it’s left to cope without intervention, the more at risk you are of it becoming a bigger problem.
.
In an ideal world (aka France), we would all be having #Endermologie#treatments regularly as part of our #wellness#beauty maintenance. And that’s what I’m hoping to achieve here on the #Mornington#Peninsula
.
Endermologie SHOULD be part of your wellness/#self-care priorities. The fact that it gives you the confidence to wear your shorts is a bonus.
.
If you want to hear more or let me reassure you that your cellulite is absolutely not the worst ever, then pop in to see me.

Another great read from Mark Sisson

As always, an excellent article from Mark Sisson.

Gut health matters

Good to know!

A natural diuretic

Growing up we used to say that anyone who picked dandelions would wet the bed that night!

Funny how these old wives tales stem from the previously known truth about dandelion’s natural diuretic properties!

This woman is ageless

Who else has zoomed in and thought WTF? This woman seems to be doing a Benjamin Button!
.
She’s a regular user of Endermologie. Think that’s a coincidence?

Every body is beautiful

After posting an image of the weirdly non-ageing JLo yesterday, I just wanted to put things into perspective.
.
In case anyone’s thinking they’re “not trying hard enough”, or JLo’s body are the body goals we all ought to be aspiring to, let’s look at what’s really important.
.
Health. A healthy body and mind. Ok?
.
The reality is JLo us genetically blessed with a great body to start with, but she also gets A LOT of help to stay looking fabulous.
.
Many celebrities have chefs that cook fresh nutritious meals for them, designed to help that individual maintain a certain weight. Think of how much easier your life would be if you didn’t have to worry about dinner every bloomin night of the week for the rest of your life?
.
They also often have access to supplements like human growth hormones which help to build muscle and weight loss, and can access skin care products that most of us would balk at. Placenta on your face anyone???
.
As well as working with trainers who motivate them daily with fun ways to get their bodies moving. And don’t believe then when they say they “just do yoga and hike once a week”. These people work hard on their bodies!
.
Then, there’s the massages, Endermologie, saunas, skin treatments like laser, botox etc etc. All up, it takes a lot of time and cash to maintain this youthful look.
.
So, don’t beat yourself up. Just work on maintaining the balance of a healthy body and mind and enjoy life!

Post op lipo referral from Dr Atalla

After recently helping a Client recover from a tricky liposuction procedure, it’s great that her Dr sees the value in pre and post op surgery.
.
Pre-op Endermologie helps to ‘soften’ the connective tissues, allowing easier access for the canula during surgery and therefore makes the surgeon’s life easier and puts the patient risk less post-op adhesions (scar tissue).
.
Post op lipo will relieve inflammation and bruising much more quickly and helps to smooth away any lumps and bumps for a smoother result, all while improving the skin tone so the skin bounces back to where it needs to be.
.
What do you reckon, do I need to expand @Peninsula.endermologie to Ferntree Gully?

Regular exfoliation is important because it unclogs pores – allowing skin to release toxins trapped inside the body. A cushion of mini massage balls relaxes tense muscles and stirs up circulation, while a plush matting of semi-stiff bristles gives skin a good buffing, helping to promote lymph flow/drainage and boost your immunity.

For a long and healthy life

Have you heeded about sirtuins? And NAD?
.
If not, it’s about time you did!
.
Sirtuins are a family of proteins that play a role in aging (and anti-aging) by regulating cellular health. They’re responsible for critical biological functions like DNA expression and aspects of aging. However, sirtuins can only function in the presence of NAD+, (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide), a coenzyme found in all living cells.

Young people should be educated about the dangers of injectable cosmetic treatments, according to Specialist Plastic Surgeon and @asapsau Member, @drpeterlaniewski when speaking with the @dailytelegraph recently.
.
Dr Laniewski said young people risked lasting changes to their facial muscles, which can “waste away” if teens get hooked on the injections. “I think education and really reinforcing self-worth, self-esteem and body image is a good thing and should start at a young age.” “Injectable cosmetic treatments are really designed for rejuvenation and enhancement of people when they age – it’s not designed for people … when they’re 18 or 21.” Dr Laniewski warned teens against cosmetic procedures until they have finished growing. “Social media is a big part of the problem because young people only ever see successful cosmetic procedures.” “Generally only positive results are portrayed on social media, the adverse reactions or bad results never get shown… which means they’re seeing a distorted version of events,” Dr Laniewski said.

Endermologie in the media

I hate to nag, but you really ought to!

Finally, collagen is making it to the headlines! If you want a great, hydrolysed, (i.e. easily absorbed source of marine collagen), pop in and grab one!

P.S. The statement that it doesn’t go straight to the skin is a little weird….nothing does. Even if you apply a product, there’s only so much of that actually being absorbed. The skin’s role is a barrier – so that’s its job, to protect from toxins, heat sources etc. Anything that’s being ingested will not go straight to the skin, it’s obviously got to go through the gut first.

The great thing is, readily absorbed collagen is amazing for gut healing and a healthy gut = healthy skin (there’s plenty of evidence to support this), so I recommend it for everyone. (Grass-fed bovine source for pregnant ladies, and either bovine or marine source for everyone else).

Our skin health is an outward reflection of our internal health. When we desire strong radiant skin, we often look for these “silver bullet” skin care products that claim to give us youthful skin.
🍠
When we have a lusterless complexion, one that appears, inflamed, saggy, and wrinkled, we need to look deeper to restore healthy looking skin. Skin cells, like all cells, need nourishment to grow.
🥦
When we adopt a standard American diet, one that is devoid of phytonutrients, and laden with refined sugars, industrialized vegetable oils, and fried foods, we create massive amounts of free radicals.
🥑
The oxidative stress induced by these free radicals in turn creates an inflammatory response. Impaired detox pathways, underlying gut dysbiosis, and hormonal imbalances are some other root causes to explore!
🥕
So, what should we focus on to improve our skin complexion? Consume more foods rich in omega 3s and high antioxidant foods, while minimizing processed carbohydrates and sugar which drive insulin (skin aging) and oxidized vegetable oils.
🍊
Salmon and oily fish like sardines are high in DHA & EPA which hydrate skin and provide cell structure. Glycine and other amino acids from fish are integral for collagen synthesis, which give our skin structural integrity. The antioxidant capacity of astaxanthin also helps protect the skin from UV damage.
🐟
Walnuts and seeds such as pumpkin are high in vitamin E, zinc (important in skin repair), copper, and ALA.
🥥
Avocados are high in vitamin E, lutein/zeaxanthin, and contain non-sunscreen protection from UV induced sun damage.
🥑
Olives and olive oil are high in vitamin E which protects against oxidative damage. People in the Mediterranean apply olive oil to their skin, many of whom swear by it.
🥦
Broccoli and other Brassica vegetables contain high amounts of sulforaphane, which is involved in phase II conjugation reactions.
🍊
Bioflavonoids in grapefruit aid in phase I biotransformation. Both Brassica and citrus are high in vitamin C, a neutralizer of free radical damage.
🍠
Sweet potatoes and carrots are rich in fat soluble carotenoids which can squelch oxidative damage.
#foodasmedicine

Just be careful!

Hurrah! I’m so over people thinking that causing damage to your skin is the best way to repair it. In some cases it may be the only option a person has, but the use of micro needling in young, healthy skin is abhorrent.

This will help you remember

I love these pictograms. Stare at this for 1 minute and you’ll find it so much easier to remember what foods are the best sources of calcium.
.
Cow’s milk doesn’t agree with everyone, so it’s good to know the alternatives.
.
Generally speaking, most adults need about 1,000mgs of calcium a day and it’s best to try and get it from natural sources rather than supplements.
.
Calcium is vital for:
. Maintaining healthy bones and teeth and preventing osteoporosis
.
Regulating muscle function

Blood clotting and heart function
.
A healthy central nervous system

Can’t get enough of these adaptogens

Always running from one thing to another? Barely keeping up with the to-do list and worrying about everything that hasn’t even made it to your to-do list yet?
.
Even if you think you’re coping and handling this crazy pace of life with relative ease, your body will be reacting to the stressors and causing your adrenals to release cortisol and adrenaline, which brings on a real stress reaction.💥
.
And, as women, these stress hormones can cause havoc with our hormonal cycle, causing all kinds of problems; broken sleep, weight gain, exhaustion, brain fog etc etc.
.
Here are 12 helpful adaptogens that combat high cortisol. I regularly take ashwagana supplements and use maca powder in my porridge/coffee. Then the moringa tea for a super-charged nutritional boost – it’s said to be the most singularly most nutritious plant (leaf) in the world.

Give your liver some love 💕
.
Our liver is a critically important organ for survival and various dietary components are essential to the healthy or diseased liver.
.
In this day in age, our liver is constantly bombarded by environmental chemicals and works over time to filter out toxic metabolites, refined fructose, synthetic hormones, alcohol, and other xenobiotics.
.
Here are a number of foods that have been elucidated in the literature to be beneficial to liver:
.
Artichoke: Contains cynarin which is hepatoproctive and aids in liver detoxification. Also a choleretic = stimulates bile flow and prevents enterohepatic recirculation of cholesterol and toxic bile for elimination.
.
Dandelion greens: Resins + pectin found in dandelion greens act as choleretics and contain anti-inflammatory compounds. Dandelion root used in congestive jaundice and cholecystitis.
.
Carrots: Beta carotene and the antioxidants in carrots attenuate liver injury. Carrot seed oil in particular also lowers metabolism of estrogen down the “bad” 4-OH detox pathway.
.
Turmeric: Contains curcumin which safeguards hepatocytes from oxidative damage associated with liver damage and cirrhosis. Curcumin is also anti-inflammatory and a choleretic.
.
Broccoli sprouts: One of the highest concentrated sources of sulforaphane. Sulforaphane is our most potent inducer of phase II detoxification as well as up-regulating Nrf2, which enhance our ability to buffer oxidative stress. Also contain DIM and glucoraphanin.
.
Garlic: Contains S-allyl cysteine, a ROS scavenger and upregulates endogenous antioxidant defense systems via Nrf-2, GSH, and SOD. Hepatoprotective against infectious agents. Organosulfur compounds utilized in phase II liver detox.
.
Beets: Betaine, the dark red hue found in beets, is an antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and supports phase II liver detoxification and up regulation of glutathione. Also a choloretic.
.
Lemon: Contains naringin, anti-inflammatory compound that decrease liver damage in mice. Limonoids promote GSH activity for phase I liver detoxification.
.
Coriander: found to have natural chelation effects on lead and mercury.

Know your spices! 🌶⠀
.⠀
Spices have been around for centuries and they’re definitely not going anywhere. Not only are they are a great low calorie way to flavor your food but they’re also packed full of different benefits. I wanted to share some of the top spices I use and some of the research behind them! Check out all the nuggets of info below:⠀
.⠀
Cayenne – In numerous studies, the active compound in cayenne, capsaicin, has been shown to reduce appetite. (1) Capsaicin also has been shown to increase energy expenditure through the activation of brown adipose tissue in humans (aka boost fat burning capabilities) (2) Although not sure how big the fat burning effect is, cayenne could be a great option to add to your health routine.⠀
.⠀
Turmeric – The compound curcumin in turmeric is a powerful antioxidant that fights oxidative stress. Initial studies show promising effects of curcumin on the prevention and therapy of cancer (3)⠀
.⠀
Black pepper – Black pepper in particular boosts the absorption of the compound curcumin and in one study was shown to boost the bioavailability by up to 2,000% (4) Studies has also shown it to boost the absorption of beta-carotene.⠀
.⠀
Sea salt – salt Is an essential mineral and too little or too much can prove to be problematic for overall health. High quality pink Himalayan or sea salt also contains trace minerals and doesn’t have any additives like the standard table salts you normally find.⠀
.⠀
Ceylon Cinnamon – can lower blood sugar by slowing down the breakdown of carbs and improving overall insulin sensitive (5) Cinnamon also is a potent antioxidant that can help fight inflammation (6)⠀
.⠀
Cumin – has been shown to increase the activity of digestive enzymes and increase the release of bile form your liver which helps to digests fat & certain nutrients. 1 tsp of cumin has 1.4mg of iron which is 17.5% of the RDI (7)⠀
.⠀
What’s your favorite spice? I know mine is definitely cinnamon.⠀

My kids have been hearing a lot of this in the last few days. I strongly believe that you need to nourish your body with plenty of nutrient dense food and even more so when you’re fighting a sickness. My Mum used to say ‘feed a cold, starve a fever”, so I’ve been encouraging lots of fresh fruit and veggies.

Tips for living better with menopause

Ah menopause. It’s a word that strikes fear into the hearts and minds of many, but is it really, always that awful?

And if perhaps we approach it with a different mindset, could it be embraced?

Read on to see if you agree with Lindsay Taylor’s account…

Tips for living better with menopause

Part 2 of the story of menopause by Lindsay Taylor who says “We assume that menopause interferes with women’s well-being and quality of life because the symptoms stink (and they definitely do for a lot of women). However, the degree to which menopause actually impacts a woman’s quality of life might depend, at least in part, on whether she experiences concurrent depression or anxiety.”

Tips for living better with menopause

Last in the series of 3 special posts from Lindsay Taylor (via Mark Sisson’s blog) regarding Menopause.

Even if you’re not there yet, it’s definitely worth a quick squiz.

It’s never too late

After researching the facts about how to maintain a healthy body and mind during menopause, I came across another excellent article by Mark Sisson. Again about us oldies, so I thought it was worth sharing!

I’m in love!!!

Introducing my fabulous new Endermologie machine!

Same amazing functionality as my last machine, delivering the same amazing results, but now all fabulously integrated into the super-comfortable massage table.

The only question is, what shall I name her?

I was discussing this same thing with a Client this morning. It’s important to remember that food and eating are one of the great social joys of our lives and being overly restrictive can cause more problems than it solves.
