ENDERMOLOGIE FOR FACE -  THE SOLUTION TO FRESH, BEAUTIFUL SKIN

The changes that occur in our skin structure with ageing affect all three layers of the skin; the epidermis, dermis and subcutaneous layers. However, the dermis is most affected, losing anywhere from 20-80% of its thickness over time. As a result, the skin begins to thin and becomes more fragile.

Facial ageing can be caused by multiple factors. These include biological factors such as genetics, the decline of cellular structures and hormonal changes. As well as external factors such as sun damage, pollution, smoking and a poor diet or dehydration.

These factors may lead to wrinkles, hollowed cheeks, drooping eyelids, jowls, blemishes and dry and sometimes rough skin.

WHAT HAPPENS TO AGEING SKIN?

Fibroblasts are the principal active cells of connective tissue. They are responsible for producing the basic building blocks of the dermis: collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid.

- Collagen is a protein that ‘holds’ the skin together, keeping it looking young and giving it firmness and elasticity.

- Elastin is a highly-elastic protein in connective tissue that gives skin its elasticity and rebound after stretching or contracting skin.

- Hyaluronic acid plays an enormous role in cell growth and renewal, as it helps retain water and keeps the skin hydrated. Note, I believe only endogenous (internally occurring) hyaluronic acid has this effect. And am therefore highly sceptical of cosmetic products that claim these effects with topical use.

As we age, the number and proliferation of fibroblasts in the dermis decrease progressively and so too does the associated production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid. After 20 years of age, a person produces approximately 1% less collagen in the skin each year. By the age of 40, almost 50% of all the hyaluronic acid in the body is located in the epidermal and subcutaneous skin layers.

Although there are many creams out there that claim to replenish ageing skin, there is little clinical evidence that any of them work.
