Facts about the skin and extra motivation to think twice about what you’re putting on it! 🙌⠀
.⠀
Here’s the deal. The skin is a vital organ & plays an important role in the function of our overall health. While we might not take what we put on our skin as seriously as what we ingest, I wanted to share some reasons to start paying more attention to what you apply to your skin.⠀
.⠀
1️⃣⠀
As the largest organ, the skin absorbs many of the lotions & makeup products you put on it. Some products so much so that some of these chemicals make it into your bloodstream. The E.U. has banned around 1,4000 ingredients from personal care products, and the U.S. has banned a measly 30.⠀
.⠀
The Solution:⠀
Make the switch to more non-toxic beauty and bath products. Use the app “Think Dirty” to check the toxicity of your products (0-3 rating is good!). It’s not about being 100% perfect with your products but slowly starting making the switch in areas you prefer.⠀
.⠀
2️⃣⠀
The skin synthesizes vitamin D through sunlight exposure & over 40% of American adults have a vitamin D deficiency.⠀
.⠀
The solution:⠀
Try exposing yourself to 10-30 min of sunlight per week before putting on sun lotion (amount needed varies by how light or how dark your skin is). Midday is the best time to get outside since the sun it’s its highest & your body might make vitamin D more efficiently at that time. Considering adding a vitamin D supplement if you can’t fit that in.⠀
.⠀
3️⃣⠀
The skin microbiome is an ecosystem of microorganisms, which protect against skin infection, fight inflammation, & promotes wound healing. However, antibacterial soaps and other harsh chemicals we apply annihilate the good bacteria in addition to the bad bacteria. Skin conditions can arise from an imbalance in the skin microbiome.⠀
.⠀
The solution:⠀
Skip overdoing antibacterial soaps & definitely don’t use them on your face. Also, making sure you have enough prebiotic & probiotic foods in your diet will also help balance the skin’s microbiome.⠀
.⠀
Hope you found this helpful!
