Endermologie for health

Lymphoedema

Lymphoedema is a condition caused by a blockage or damage to the lymphatic system, leading to a build-up of fluid usually in the ankles, feet and legs and sometimes arms. Along with a healthy diet and sufficient fluid intake, Endermologie can help to relive fluid build-up and in some cases, restore normal lymphatic function.

Some benefits of improved lymphatic drainage are:

- Relief of fluid retention and inflammation in the skin tissues

- Boosts the immune system

- Reported quicker recovery, i.e. less bruising and inflammation, leading to improved mobility after trauma

In a recent study, Doctors stated "Endermologie therapy for a post-mastectomy upper limb lymphedema induced both objective improvement in the form of decrease upper limb swelling and subjective improvements in the form of decreased pain and improved the mobility of the affected limb. Upon the results of the current study Endermologie therapy can be recommended to patients with upper limb secondary lymphedema as a safe therapy without side effects."

A separate study compared Endermologie with manual lymphatic massage and showed that: “Endermologie treatment has a 33% shorter treatment time than manual lymph drainage”.

Fibromyalgia

Fibromyalgia comes from the Latin word for fibrous tissue (fibro) and the Greek words for muscle (myo) and pain (algia). Fibromyalgia is a chronic disorder characterized by muscle pain, fatigue, stiffness and tenderness of the joints, muscles and tendons. The causes of fibromyalgia are not known, however researchers have speculated that increased liver toxicity and/or bacterial overgrowth, genetic predisposition, abnormalities in the immune system, accidental injury or trauma to the muscle or repetitive injuries, sleep deprivation or other types of stressful or traumatic events could all be causative factors. Fibromyalgia can be also be worsened by external factors, including emotional stress, noise and changes in weather.

Endermologie actively promotes a healthy circulation, increasing vascular circulation by 400% and lymphatic circulation by 300% for up to 6 hours post treatment. This creates increased oxygen exchange and releases toxins. It can also assist in breaking down the fibrotic adhesions, (scar tissue or knots) in the superficial fascia. Clinical studies have shown show that Endermologie provides relief of the pain, fatigue, morning tiredness, work difficulty, stiffness, anxiety and depression associated with fibromyalgia. Endermologie has also been found to improve sleep patterns, posture and allow an increase in the range of motion and overall quality of life.

As Endermologie is a gentle massage, using negative pressure, it is usually easier to tolerate than other, deeper forms of massage. Most people with Fibromyalgia report that they find Endermologie more comfortable than manual massage.

Scleroderma

Scleroderma is also sometimes known as systemic sclerosis. It is a chronic connective tissue disorder that affects mostly women – usually between the ages of 30 and 50 years. Scleroderma occurs when there is an overproduction and accumulation of collagen in body tissues. This causes areas of the skin and connective tissues to harden and tighten, creating inflammation and pain that can be temporarily reduced by Endermologie treatments.

When combined with other therapies, a series of Endermologie treatments provides a natural, non-invasive approach to temporarily increasing treatment site-local circulation, while easing the pain, stiffness and muscle soreness associated with the above medical conditions.

Post operative recovery from liposuction

During surgical liposuction, a cannula is passed through the skin to remove fat cells in the reserve fat layer. This procedure can sometimes cause disruption to the lymphatic channels and injury of the cellular tissues. In some patients, this can lead to the appearance of lumps, bumps, swelling and discomfort in the post-operative period.

Most patients will be advised to wear compression garments for about three weeks post surgery. Many Cosmetic Surgery Clinicians recommend a course of Endermologie 2-3 weeks pre-op and then again 2-3 weeks after liposuction. Endermologie is non-invasive and gently stimulates circulation, thereby helping to reduce swelling and bruising and improve skin tone. It also helps to smoothen any minor contour irregularities and prevent the formation of scar tissue. Most patients who use Endermologie following liposuction report a quicker recovery time and a smoother, more satisfactory result.

Endermologie lipomassage should be avoided for at least 4-6 months after fat transfer to ensure the graft survives.

Improve the appearance of scar tissue

Scarring is the body’s natural healing response to an injury to the skin such as an accident or acne eruptions. Endermologie® mobilises and gently stretches the tissue layers to soften the scar tissue. Increased oxygenation and stimulation of fibroblasts and collagen allow further improvement of the appearance of the skin/scar tissue.

In the case of hypertrophic and keloid scars, we urge you to seek the advice of a specialist dermatologist as these scars may not respond as well to treatment with Endermologie.

Gradually improve the appearance of stretch marks

Stretch marks occur when the skin suddenly stretches and the connective tissues in the dermis (middle layer of skin) breaks, allowing the deeper layers to show through. Stretch marks develop in two main stages. In the initial stage the stretch marks are red or purple in colour and are clearly visible. In the later, second stage, the stretch marks become a white/silvery colour and appear less visible.

The dermis can be stretched due to growth spurts in puberty, during pregnancy and as a result of weight gain. It is important to see your GP if you have stretch marks that aren’t linked to weight gain or growth, as they may be an indicator of other health conditions.

Some people have reported an improvement of the appearance of stretch marks following a course of Endermologie due to the increase of vascular microcirculation and activation of fibroblasts (connective tissue cells which produce collagen and elastin).
